Dietary fiber : the parts of plant foods our body can’t digest or absorb. Found mainly in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes.
- Insoluble fiber: Doesn’t dissolve in water.
- Soluble fiber (fermentable fiber): Dissolves in water and forms a gel in the gut. It can be fermented by gut bacteria and help increase the number of healthy bacteria in the gut.
“Nondigestible food ingredients that beneficially affect the host by selectively stimulating the growth and/or activity of one or a limited number of bacteria in the colon, thus improving host health”
“Not All Dietary Fibers are Prebiotics”
